District 6380 Governor Bala Murthy conducts new member induction ceremony: Stephen Moore and Akiba Tucker

BALA MURTHY BIO
Rotary 6380 District Governor 2022-23
 
  • Born in Mysore, India, Bala obtained his BA in Mechanical Engineering and worked at Tata Motors for several years before moving to the United States to complete his MBA at the University of Pittsburgh.  There he fell in love with his classmate Roma, and they have been happily married for 37 years!  Bala and Roma have a son Arjun, who lives nearby with his wife and their grandson Jackson, age 2-1/2

  • Shortly after marrying, Bala and Roma moved to Grand Blanc, MI where Bala went to work for General Motors. There he completed his MS from Carnegie Mellon, specializing in software development.  His career with GM lasted 27 years!
 
  • Throughout his life, and despite many career moves, Bala has been involved with Rotary.  First he was part of an Indo-Canadian youth exchange team with Victoria, BC,Canada, focused on youth development and peace initiatives. Then Bala became a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar.  He has subsequently been a member of the Rotary Clubs of Detroit and Washington D.C., and President of the Grand Blanc and Troy Rotary Clubs.  His Rotary Committee work has included International Services, Rotary Foundation, Embassy Relations and Sister Cities

  • After a devastating earthquake in India in 1993, Bala coordinated a global grant to build low-cost housing shelters for earthquake survivors, for which he received the 1993-94 D6330 Rotary Foundation District Service Award.  Bala has led many grants for water related projects as well as for supporting schools in both India and Cancun, Mexico to get desks, chairs and blackboards.
 
  • Bala believes strongly in Rotary Fellowships.  He started the Yoga and Meditation Fellowship which is now in its 4th year and is President of the Rotary Travel and Hosting Fellowship. He is a member of the Rotary International Alumni Relations Committee.
 
As you can see, our District Governor is truly passionate about giving back to our local and global communities! 
 
Bala speaks multiple Indian languages, is an avid traveler and a marathon runner. He loves music and meeting people from all over the world.
